Butiang Atas, Les Village, Tejakula
Luh Yuliasari or Yulia lives in the highlands of Les Village called Butiang Atas (this is the upper area of Butiang). To visit and meet Yulia, our team put in lots of effort to reach the location where her home is; it is high up in the peak of the Les hills. There are only two to three houses (neighbors) located nearby.
Yulia is one of many girls in Desa Les from an impoverished family. Her father works in the capital of Denpas ar, close to 3 hours away from Desa Les, and only comes back on
weekends. Her mother makes tipat; a Balinese offering sold for only US$4 per pack (her
mother can only make two packs per day due to the complicated process).
Yulia recently graduated from the local high school in Tejakula; she likes to cook, and her dream is to one day be a professional cook. However, her family cannot afford to pay for further education for her. She applied to many undergraduate scholarship programs, but her applications were rejected repeatedly because of the large number of national competitors and the limited seats available for scholarships. Despite the multiple rejects, Yulia still managed to keep her dream alive. She kept focused on the next level of education and did no t want to give up. Her courage brought her to Amisewaka, and here she was accepted as one of our students. Her courage inspired us; we believe that all women everywhere should have access and the opportunity to dare to turn their dreams into reality.
