Yoga Laksana is one of Amisewaka – DLCC (DLCC) alumni who proves that limitations are not a barrier to achieving greater goals. He graduated from a vocational high school majoring in hospitality during the COVID-19 pandemic, a difficult period when job opportunities in the hospitality industry were extremely limited. Instead of working directly in a hotel, he chose to help his uncle support himself and his family. During that time, he also assisted with the construction of the DLCC campus, without realizing that it would later become the starting point of a major transformation in his life.
Coming from a financially underprivileged family, Yoga once set aside his dream of continuing his education. His main focus was to work and support his family. However, the presence of the DLCC opened a new opportunity. Its proximity to his home and its affordable training system gave him the confidence to make an important decision: to continue his education and begin a new journey to build industry-relevant skills and knowledge.
During his training at the DLCC, Yoga gained more than technical skills. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, he learned about professional work culture, discipline, and sustainability, in addition to practical hospitality training. His focus was on culinary arts, where he continuously improved his cooking skills while building confidence in a professional environment.
One of the most challenging experiences in his journey was training in a five-star hotel kitchen. At first, he felt fear and self-doubt, as it was his first time working in a high-standard professional setting. However, with strong determination and belief in himself, Yoga completed the training. His commitment led to an opportunity to work as a daily worker and later continue as an apprentice, where he learned the importance of speed, accuracy, and consistency in a professional kitchen.
The opportunity to work in the Maldives came through a recommendation from his supervisor, who had previous experience there. With proper guidance, Yoga prepared himself seriously, especially by improving his English skills to face interviews with the Chef and HR Officer. After passing the interview process, he continued with documentation, contract arrangements, and departed independently, an important step that required courage, as it was his first time working abroad.
The first few days in the Maldives were challenging. Yoga had to adapt to a new environment, an international work culture, and colleagues from different countries. He learned to be flexible, respectful, and professional, while also understanding and respecting local customs and traditions. Despite the challenges, he experienced significant benefits, including a competitive, tax-free salary in USD, full facilities, and an international working environment that enriched his professional growth.
Today, Yoga has experienced a meaningful change in his life. He has broader perspectives, stronger English communication skills, first developed at the DLCC, and improved financial stability that allows him to save and support his family. Above all, he feels proud of surviving challenges and starting a journey that once seemed impossible.
Looking ahead, Yoga believes that growth should never stop. He sees self-investment, especially in health and knowledge, as the most valuable foundation for the future. Through his journey, Yoga encourages younger students to stay focused, remain motivated, and not be afraid of failure or new opportunities. Every path is different, and the key is choosing one that allows continuous growth.
