Ketut Kasihini, is the proud mother of Kadek Yoga Mahardika, one of the students at Amisewaka. After only a few months of studying at the Amisewaka Desa Les Community Center, Kadek’s father passed away. Ketut has had to take on the role of both breadwinner and emotional support for her children since becoming a widow, ably supported by her son.
In a society that is both patrilineal and patriarchal, widows often become invisible and lose their agency. Ketut is grateful for Kadek’s hard work and dedication and proud of his achievements. She says he has improved greatly since his time at high school. As part of his training, he currently works at a hotel in Denpasar, the capital of Bali.
As the eldest child in an economically challenged family, Kadek feels a sense of responsibility to take care of his younger siblings and make his mother proud. Although he has gotten used to working life, the memories of his father sometimes surface and brings him to tears.
Despite his grief, Kadek remains determined to continue his studies at Amisewaka-DLCC, and work at the hotel in Denpasar. The hotel supervisors have been impressed with his performance and may ask him to continue working after he finishes his studies.
Kadek’s story is one of resilience and determination in the face of adversity. He is a shining example of how hard work and perseverance can lead to success, even amidst grief and challenges.
Amisewaka continues to offer hope by impacting lives through education.
